During the summer of 1959 and 1960, Mrs. Hughes attended Martin Methodist College. In 1965, she graduated from George Peabody College for Teachers with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. After teaching high school Physical Education in Alabama for three years, Mrs. Hughes came to Martin Methodist in the fall of 1968. She completed her Master's in Education in 1972 at MTSU.
Mrs. Hughes coached the first women's tennis team at Martin Methodist in 1973. In 1975, the women's tennis team won the Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association State Championship and the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 7 Championship. That year, Mrs. Hughes was selected as the TJCAA Coach of the Year. From 1975-1978, she served as the Publicity Chairperson for the TJCAA.
Other than tennis, Mrs. Hughes has coached women's basketball from 1975-1978. She began coaching women's softball in 1979 until 1994. The softball team won five Region 7 Championships and three State Championships. She has been cheerleader sponsor from 1968-1974 and again in 1994 until the present.
Mrs. Hughes has been a very dedicated worker in the Red Cross since 1968 and was elected Red Cross Volunteer of the Year in 1981. She has worked with the Special Olympics in Giles County since 1981. She was inducted into the Special Olympics Hall of Fame in 1988 and was Special Olympics Coach of the Year in 1989. Coach Hughes was inducted into the Martin Methodist College Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. She was also inducted into the Giles County Little League Sport Hall of Fame in 2001.
Coach Hughes currently serves as the Senior Women's Athletic Administrator. She also teaches Health and Physical Education for the Elementary Program. Coach Hughes also serves as the Director of the Robert E. Curry Christian Life Center.
Coach Hughes has been married to Terry D. Hughes for 41 years and they have two children, Tancy and Troy, both of Pulaski. Troy is married to Michelle Lawrence Hughes, and they have two children, Clay (14) and Victoria (10).
