Associate Head Coach Chris Harris begins his second season with the RedHawks women’s basketball program. Harris serves as the program’s recruiting and scouting coordinator, and is responsible for the team’s offense and the development of the perimeter players. He has over thirteen years of collegiate coaching experience, including four years of collegiate head coaching experience.
This past season, Harris was responsible for signing one of the largest and quite possibly the most talented recruiting classes the program has ever seen, and because of his efforts was recently promoted to Associate Head Coach. This class includes six highly touted freshmen, as well as seven junior college transfers who will all contribute immediately.
“Coach Harris worked extremely hard this past season building our program’s recruiting bases and putting us on the level we need to be at in order to compete on a national level,” said Coach Sullivan. “I’m very pleased with where our program is and where our program is going; and that is a direct credit to Coach Harris.”
Harris has been a success at every level of basketball. In 1998, he was hired to start the women’s basketball program at Houston Baptist University which previously had never had a program. In only his first season, the team went 25-9, made the NAIA National Tournament, and finished ranked #25 in the Final Season Poll. His team was ranked nationally in almost every offensive category, including: team 3-point percentage, team scoring offense, team field goal percentage, and team rebounding margin.
As an assistant at New Mexico State University in 2001, he helped the team finish with its best record in six years. The team led the nation in 3-point field goals made, was second in average 3-point baskets made, and was fourth in team free-throw percentage. While head coach at Connors State College in 2002, Harris signed six All-State players in only one year.
In 2004, he was hired at the University of Alabama-Huntsville as an assistant. As Offensive Coordinator at UAH, Harris helped guide the team to only their third Gulf South Tournament in school history. The team improved in four statistical categories, including: points per game, field goal percentage, 3-point percentage, and free-throw percentage.
The Nashville, Tennessee native graduated from Oklahoma Panhandle State University with a BS in Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1995.
