HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Martin Methodist College baseball defeated NCAA Division II University of Alabama, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon, as junior lefty Josh Brown earned the complete game win. MMC rebounded from a weekend sweep with the win, and improved to 3-5 on the season.
Brown, throwing his second complete game win, improved to 2-1 as he scattered eight hits on the day with three strikeouts. Clint Gobbell tallied a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Josh Swipas brought in a run with a double, the only MMC extra-base hit.
The RedHawks got on the board first, as leadoff batter, Matt Thomas, singled to the infield, advancing to second on a wild throw. A passed ball moved Thomas to third, and a wild pitch then broke open the scoring as Thomas crossed the plate.
UAH answered in the fourth with a solo homerun off Brown, but it would prove to be the only run of the day for the Chargers.
The tie was short-lived as Martin Methodist added a run in the top of the fifth inning, when Zack Bailey reached on a fielder's choice, and advanced on a third-strike wild pitch that allowed Thomas to again reach base. Rob Holley then answered the call with a single up the middle that plated Bailey for the go-ahead run.
MMC then added an insurance run in the sixth, as Nick Flanagan was hit by a pitch, and advanced to scoring position on Matt Franklin's groundout to third. Swipas then doubled down the left field line to score Flanagan for the 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Chargers threatened with runners on first and second with just one out, but Brown worked out of the jam, forcing foul-out and a groundout ended the threat of a rally.
