KANSAS CITY, Mo. - As the NAIA announced the launch of their new website on Friday morning, Martin Methodist is in the national spotlight. While MMC is no new face to the NAIA's top ranks across many sports, this time the institution is featured in a different light. Golfer Brittany Kriz earned the opportunity to work as a virtual intern for the NAIA, and her human interest story on soccer standout Mor Efraim is the lead story on the new women's soccer page.
A re-design on the NAIA.org has long been expected and in the process over the past year. In addition to a full staff of sports information and media professionals, the NAIA opened a virtual internship for students across the United States that would allow them to submit different public relations and media projects. Also a writer for the RedHawk Reporter, Kriz decided to jump at the chance. MMC's Kriz was chosen as one several students after submitting an application for the opportunity that lasts for the entirety of the 2011-12 school year.
"I wasn't really sure if I wanted to apply, but I just gave it a shot," said Kriz. "It was something I'd be interested in doing in the future, and when I had to choose a major for school, I really didn't know if I wanted to go with journalism or biology because I liked both. So, I majored in biology, but this gave me a chance to explore the writing."
Kriz is involved in monthly conference calls with the NAIA and other interns, in which they discuss upcoming articles or events.
"The NAIA is always willing to help me," noted Kriz. "They will help me make contacts or get in touch with people I need for my articles."
Kriz's featured story, which ran in MMC's on campus newspaper the RedHawk Reporter, will now receive national attention, and is a cherished accomplishment for Kriz.
"It's really cool that everyone will see my story first, I just hope people will enjoy it," Kriz said in reaction to learning her story would run in headlines. "It was my concern to make sure Mor liked it; she was really amazing to work with because she was more centered on her team than herself, and that's what really what made the story what it was."
Kriz will have more opportunities to write for the NAIA, as she expects to complete 6-8 more articles before the end of the semester as she begins her golf season.
