PULASKI, Tenn. - During a 23-point performance on Monday night against Blue Mountain College, local-standout Vee Young captured her 1,000th point of her two-year career at Martin Methodist College. Young has scored 1,003 career points at MMC in 47 games, good for 21.3 points per game. During those 47 games, she has averaged 26 minute per game, leading to a ratio of one point per 75 seconds of playing time.
"Vee has been a joy to coach," remarked head coach Jamy Bechler. "I am so happy that she has accomplished this milestone. She was the most publicized recruit we've had, and she has lived up to the expectations. All of her scoring is a great individual accomplishment but it also goes a long way toward helping our program achieve its team goals, namely earning a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. I am looking forward to watching Vee help us make team history."
Before coming to Martin Methodist, Young spent two years at Volunteer State Community College where she scored a total of 826 points, and was named Tennessee Junior College West Division Player of the Year as a sophomore.
Coming back to her hometown of Pulaski to play her final two season of basketball, Young made a name for herself, earning a Third Team NAIA All-American selection as a junior, and earning a place on pre-season All-Conference team as the second leading vote getter in the league.
During her two seasons, she has compiled a 53 percent shooting percentage from the field, and also made a statement on the glass with 444 career rebounds. This season, Young has reached a career-high 39 points on two occasions, and has been named TranSouth Player of the week.
Young is the second current RedHawk to score 1,000 points, as Micah Anderson achieved this mark last year and currently stands at 1320 for her four-year career. She is just the sixth player all-time to join the 1,000 club. Kim Cooper, Missy Bottoms Harper, Kim Loop Bracey, and Whitney Robison are the only other former RedHawks that have scored 1000 or more points while playing at Martin Methodist. Bracey holds the all-time point record with 2,036 total and all-time rebound record with 1,182.
In addition to the success Young has achieved at MMC, she adds to the legacy that her mother, the former Priscilla Holt, left on Martin Methodist as a star basketball player for the then junior college.
Young will honored for her achievement between Thursday night's games against Freed-Hardeman. She will be recognized just prior to the start of the men's 8pm start.
