MAYFIELD, Ky. - Sophomore Paula Sioto recorded a triple-double as the RedHawks defeated Mid-Continent, 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16) for their first TranSouth win of the season. Sioto's feat is the second MMC triple-double of the season, first by Precious Sanders, as the RedHawks improve to 5-7, 1-2 in TSAC competition.
MMC took the first two sets of the competition, and led in the third set 21-20, but a late MCU comeback pushed the set to extra points, and eventually forced a fourth set. The RedHawks, however, capitalized and clinched the victory with a quick 25-16 win.
Sioto with 15 kills, 18 assists, and 23 digs led on both the offensive and defensive sides of the RedHawks' attack, as Sanders notched a double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs. Both Ya Zhao and Ann-Katherin Kuehorn each turned in double-digit kills with 13 apiece, while Sandra Stojimirovic tallied a 19 dig performance.
Zhao had an all-around night, with just three hitting errors for a team-high .455 clip, alongside three service aces and two blocks. Ulirike Gebhardt stuffed her opponents four times, including one solo block. As a whole, the team turned in a .245 hitting percentage with both Sioto and Kuehorn hitting over .300.
MMC continues their road stand next week, with a non-conference match at NCAA Division III Birmingham Southern next Wednesday, and a league contest at Cumberland University on Thursday.
