LEBANON, Tenn. (4/20) - Martin Methodist moved up two spots to 18th in the 2011 NAIA Women's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 Poll released Tuesday, the next-to-last poll of the season. The RedHawks (11-5) have won five straight matches and 8-of-9 since March 25.
Martin Methodist's Paloma Cortina was named the TranSouth Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday after winning all four of her matches last week for the RedHawks.
Cortina won all four of her matches for the RedHawks at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. She defeated Alabama-Huntsville's Gia Mulky, 6-0, 6-1; and Tennessee Wesleyan's Beatriz Signori, 6-1, 6-2, in singles.
Cortina and Maria Charrys won 9-7 over UAH's Amanda Sippel and Maria Lawton and 8-2 against TWC's Signori and Zolzaya Enhkbat in doubles.
Cortina is now 9-6 in singles and 8-7 in doubles, all at No. 1 in the lineup, since enrolling at MMC in January.
Martin Methodist defeated Bethel University, 7-2, on Monday in McKenzie, Tenn., completing an undefeated regular season in TranSouth Conference play. MMC will likely be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in next week's NAIA Qualifying Tournament at The Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., set for April 29-30.
The winner of the qualifying tournament receives an automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Ala., on May 17-21.
