LEBANON, Tenn. (3/15) - Martin Methodist's Maria Charrys was named the TranSouth Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday after helping the RedHawks win a pair of matches over the weekend in the Auburn Montgomery Spring Invitational, including the program's first-ever victory over Georgetown College.
Charrys, a mid-term enrollee for MMC, upped her singles record to 3-3 and her doubles mark to 4-2 with two victories in each. The Valledupar, Colombia, native and Mikaela Long lost 8-0 at No. 2 doubles to Petra Pesic and Joyce Oliveira and Charrys dropped a 0-6, 0-6, decision at No. 3 singles to Alexandra Kaluza against 20th-ranked William Carey.
Charrys and Paloma Cortina defeated Georgetown's Adrienne Bartlett and Kaitlyn Thompson, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles for MMC's only doubles point, and Charrys posted a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Natalie Hill at No. 3 singles.
Against Campbellsville University, Charrys and Cortina won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles against Tanya Murtagh and Anita Henestrosa, and Charrys recorded a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Gleidys Salazar at No. 3 singles.
Last week, Santos and Renato Castro defeated Bethel's Joao Souza and Eduardo Espinar, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles before Santos, ranked 47th nationally in singles, won 6-2, 6-2, over Paolo Vecchi at No. 1 doubles in an 8-1 MMC victory last Thursday in McKenzie, Tenn.
On Friday, Santos and Castro teamed to win 8-3 again at No. 1 doubles against Muskingum College's Malcolm Reedand Adrian Matthewsat No. 1. Santos posted a 6-0, 6-0, triumph at No. 1 singles as well in the RedHawks 9-0 team victory.
Santos is 6-2 this season in singles and 2-3 in doubles for the RedHawks. Martin Methodist next plays in the Auburn Montgomery spring tournament March 10-13.
Cortina and Anastasia Aleshchevadefeated Bethel's Michella Douglasand Erica Peterson, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles and Cortina posted a 6-0, 6-0, victory against Douglas at No. 1 singles in MMC's 9-0 team win last Thursday.
Martin Methodist hosts Cumberland on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. and will travel to 16th-ranked Lee University on Saturday at Noon CT.
